Allan Gray's global asset management partner is the Orbis Group, which is based in Bermuda and London. Orbis was founded by Allan Gray who is still actively involved in managing the company and investment analysis. All our domestic clients' offshore assets are managed by Orbis. The two groups share a common founder, the same ethos and value-based investment approach.
Orbis began managing money with the formation of its first mutual funds in January 1990 and now has assets under management exceeding US$ 19,200 million. All clients' assets are held independently of Orbis by The Bank of Bermuda (in Bermuda) or State Street (in Massachusetts), each amongst the world's most experienced custodian banks. In addition, Orbis has appointed The Bank of Bermuda to provide shareholder services and to maintain the shareholder register.
The following Orbis mutual funds are registered in South Africa:
- The Orbis Global Equity Fund, the core and largest of the Orbis funds, an actively managed fund investing in global shares, seeking to outperform the FTSE World Index.
- The Orbis Japan Funds, offered in Yen and Euro classes, that invest solely in Japanese stockmarkets.
- The Orbis Optimal SA Funds, offered in US$ and Euro classes, that invest in global equities and employ stockmarket hedging to reduce risk of loss.
